Ramallah Municipality Signs Three International Cooperation Agreements
With Spanish, Belgian and South African municipalities and aletter of Intent with four Chilean municipalities

Ramallah municipality signed three cooperation agreements with Johannesburg municipality, Liege municipality from Belgium and San Sebastian municipality from Spain, and a Letter of Intent with four Chilean municipalities (Estacion central, Valdivia, Villa Alemana, and San Carlos) on the sidelines of the International Conference of Local Authorities in solidarity with the Palestinian people held in Ramallah. Ramallah municipality seeks through such agreements to attain support to the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people in freedom and human rights, promote the status of the city of Ramallah internationally, develop methods of cooperation with similar cities to Ramallah through the exchange of expertise between staff, as well as to support different projects in Ramallah relating to health, environment, culture, transportation…etc. in addition to networking the institutions of the city with similar institutions at these international cities.

The municipality held seven meetings with a number of delegations including, Bordeaux municipality from France, Liege municipality from Belgium, Harare municipality from Zimbabwe, Aarhus municipality from Denmark, Cankaya municipality from Turkey, and the delegation of Johannesburg that was the largest delegation that attended the conference hosted by Ramallah municipality in addition to a delegation representing four Chilean municipalities, where the Public Relations and Media Department was able to reap the fruits of a whole year of strenuous efforts ,hard work and excellent communications through signing a number of agreements and twinings and developing understandings with other municipalities as agreements will be signed with them in the near future.

Signing a cooperation agreement with Johannesburg municipality
Ramallah municipality signed a cooperation agreement with Johannesburg municipality under the auspices of the Minister of Local Government Nayef Abu Khalaf and the South African Deputy Minister of Local Government in presence of a number of European municipal delegations and local officials. The agreement aims at cooperation in the fields of smart cities, transportation and university student exchanges. This agreement is of utmost importance to Ramallah municipality since South Africa is highly regarded by the Palestinian people for its support to the Palestinian cause for liberation from occupation. Additionally, Ramallah municipality named a square in the city after Nelson Mandela for his heroic efforts and positions supporting the Palestinian people. On the other hand, Johannesburg municipality regarded this agreement as a type of responsibility towards supporting the Palestinian people in their struggle with the occupation.

Signing cooperation agreements with the municipalities of Liege from Belgium and San Sebastian from Spain
Ramallah municipality signed cooperation agreements with the municipalities of Liege from Belgium and San Sebastian from Spain on the sidelines of the International Conference of Local Authorities in solidarity with the Palestinian people. These agreements come as part of Ramallah municipality’s aim to attain more understanding between both municipalities in both cities in order to contribute towards building peace and creating a better future. The agreement includes work in the fields of local governance, good governance and benefit from the expertise of both municipalities in the fields of education, culture, tourism and environment.

Ramallah municipality held a meeting with the delegation of Liege municipality in order to discuss methods of mutual cooperation that is based on advancing, activating and exchanging expertise both parties have, particularly in the fields of technology, youth development, health, culture, and environmental issues, as well as activating youth exchange in the fields of sports, theater and the youth municipal council in Ramallah and participation in conferences and meetings on the international arena.

Ramallah municipality signs a Letter of Intent with four Chilean municipalities
Ramallah municipality signed a Letter of Intent with four Chilean municipalities after the meeting held between Ramallah municipality and the municipalities of Estacion central, Valdivia, Villa Alemana, and San Carlos, in which Ramallah municipality stressed that it always regards South American countries as friends, as the Palestinian community in Chile is one of the largest Palestinian communities abroad, which adds to the relations between both peoples. The Chilean delegation was composed of mayors, who are of Palestinian origins, and who expressed their joy and appreciation in having this meeting with the mayor of Ramallah municipality who received them, they also assured on the importance of work in favor of the Palestinian cause and people. They also stressed that work will be done to take clear procedures in support of the Palestinian people,they also announced the decision of the Chilean football player, Roberto Catrin, to adopt a Palestinian team.

Ramallah municipality holds meeting with Bordeaux municipality
On another note, Ramallah municipality held a meeting with Bordeaux municipality from France represented by its municipal council member Benoit Martin, where methods of cooperation and promotion of relations between both countries were discussed, and the possibility of implementing cooperative projects that should benefit the city and its residents were proposed. New fileds of cooperation were alsodiscussed such as tourism, water, and drainage.

Ramallah municipality receives Cankaya municipality from Turkey
Ramallah municipality received Cankaya municipality from Turkey, represented by the director of international relations Ismail Kinaz and Sireen Golzerl, who met with the public relations committee at the Ramallah municipality, Ala’ Abu Ein, Kamal Deibes, Maher Hanania, the Director of Public Relations and Media Maha Shehadeh and the head of the international and local relations division Rana Habayeb.

The committee welcomed the Turkish delegation appreciating the call for solidarity with the Palestinian people. The committee and the delegation discussed methods of cooperation, provision of services, exchange of expertise and development of mechanisms to promote cooperation between them, particularly in the fields of solid waste, environment, culture, economy, sporting activities and other fields.

While the Turkish delegation expressed their utmost pleasure to attend and participate in the International Conference of Local Authorities in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and in light of the relations between the Palestinian and Turkish peoples and based on the MOU formerly signed between both parties, a work plan was developed with Cankaya to work in the fields of economy, trade and urban planning.

It is worth noting that Ramallah municipality has several twinnings with Turkish municipalities including Dyar Baker and Cankaya, and it seeks to expand its relations in the future in order to expand the support base and networking, communication and cooperation efforts.

Ramallah municipality meets Harare municipality from Zimbabwe and Aarhus municipality from Denmark
Ramallah municipality,represented in its mayor, Eng. Musa Hadid, the municipal council member Eng. Kamal Deibes , the general director of Ramallah Municipality Ahmad Abu Laban, and the director of public relations and media Maha Shehadeh, met separately with both mayor of Harare municipality- Zimbabwe , Bernard Manyenyeni and the mayor of youth and public services at Aarhus municipality from Denmark, Rabie Azad Ahmad.

On his part, Manyenyeni expressed his pleasure to attend and participate in the International Conference of Local Authorities in solidarity with the Palestinian people, he noted that 3 municipalities from Zimbabwe decided to have twinning with three Palestinian cities, where the areas of cooperation between the cities will be studied in order to develop relations soon between the cities. While the mayor of Harare expressed their willingness to receive the following International Conference of Local Authorities in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Zimbabwe.

On his part, Ahmad expressed his pleasure to attend and participate in the International Conference of Local Authorities in solidarity with the Palestinian people, stating that this meeting builds on former discussions aiming at developing relations with Ramallah municipality, where in this phase they are upgraded to the official level. Rabie addressed an informal invitation to the president of Ramallah municipality to participate in the conference that will be held in Aarhus on the work of municipalities next spring. Both parties discussed possible aspects of cooperation, particularly industrial, commercial and youth sectors.Ramallah municipality organized a tour in the city starting with the tomb of the late president Yasser Arafat, where Dr. Hussein Al-Araj received and accompanied the delegation. A representative from each municipality placed a wreath of flowers holding the name of their city on the tomb of the late president. Other locations were then visited including Ramallah recreational center, Al-Teerah area, Nelson Mandela square and Al-Birweh Park – Mahmoud Darwish museum.
