Resilient Ramallah 2020-2050

In 2014, Ramallah earned its place among the first 33 cities to join the 100 Resilient Cities Network, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation in the United States. Through this global network, the city has actively exchanged knowledge and experiences with partner cities while developing innovative strategies to bolster urban resilience, equipping Ramallah to address the challenges it faces.

Ramallah has weathered many trials throughout its history, including waves of displacement, the ongoing impacts of Israeli occupation, and restrictions on vital national resources. These barriers—affecting mobility, land, borders, and water—continue to test the city's capacity to thrive and sustain itself.

To strengthen Ramallah's ability to confront such challenges, the municipality, alongside local and international partners, embarked on developing the Ramallah Resilience Strategy 2050. This strategy adopts a comprehensive approach, encompassing institutional, legal, environmental, economic, and social dimensions. The vision for the city is clear: A resilient, optimistic, sustainable, and inclusive city—proud of its culture and in control of its destiny.

This vision is supported by three strategic directions; regaining control over the city’s resources, responsive governance that serves its citizens, and harnessing opportunities to maximize potential. The strategy also outlines 11 objectives and 37 interventions, all aimed at enhancing the city's capacity to navigate crises and achieve sustainable urban development.

The Ramallah Resilience Strategy 2050 introduces a novel methodology for urban development, promoting interconnected and inclusive sectors. This framework serves as a guide for Ramallah and offers a model for integrated and inclusive development across Palestine. By engaging all aspects of development on both citywide and national levels, the strategy seeks to create a unified and resilient future for Ramallah and Palestine.
