In honor of the late journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, the Ramallah Municipality laid the cornerstone for the Shireen Abu Akleh Museum on the first anniversary of her martyrdom. The museum is expected to open on May 11, 2025, marking the third anniversary of her passing.
The idea to create the museum arose following Shireen's tragic death while covering Israeli military attacks in Jenin. The Ramallah Municipality took the initiative to present this idea to Al Jazeera Media Network, which immediately welcomed the idea, agreeing to partner with the municipality in bringing the project to life.
Under the agreement, the Ramallah Municipality will allocate a prime piece of land for the project, while Al Jazeera will fund the construction and equipping of the museum. Once completed, the municipality will be responsible for managing and operating the museum.
The main objective of the project is to establish an interactive, permanent space dedicated to the memory of Shireen, transforming it into a space for both education and inspiration. The museum will aim to immortalize Shireen’s legacy, honor the martyrs of Palestinian journalism, document the history of Palestinian media and its icons, and provide platforms for journalists and younger generations to express the current reality of the Palestinian cause. It will also play a vital role in raising public awareness of the importance of media in shaping narratives and advancing the Palestinian narrative.
