In honor of the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, the Municipality of Ramallah, in collaboration with the Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee, the Prime Minister's Office, and the Mahmoud Darwish Foundation, established Al-Birwa Garden (Mahmoud Darwish Garden). The internationally acclaimed Palestinian architect Jaafar Tukan generously designed the garden, which includes the Mahmoud Darwish Museum, a multipurpose hall, and beautifully landscaped grounds. The project, which reflects a deep cultural and artistic vision, was completed at a cost of approximately 2.3 million Jordanian dinars.
Al-Birwa Garden was chosen to enshrine Darwish’s final resting place. The garden features expansive green spaces, reflective water pools, and a unique “Free Speech Corner.” The museum itself holds a treasure trove of Darwish's legacy, including his personal belongings, family photos, and moments captured with prominent figures. An electronic library offers access to his works alongside a curated selection of literary texts. A biographical mural at the entrance, presented in both Arabic and English, narrates his life story—from his birth in 1943 to his passing in August 2008. The space invites all visitors to reflect, learn, and celebrate the enduring legacy of a poet who continues to inspire generations.
