Located near the Water Authority headquarters, Haidar Abdel Shafi Square was inaugurated in 2014. Its design features a central olive tree surrounded by earthy tones of soil and gravel. The square is a tribute to the doctor and leading Palestinian figure.
Haider Mohieddin Abdel Shafi (June 10, 1919 – September 24, 2007) was a prominent Palestinian physician and one of Palestine’s most influential leaders. He led the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid Peace Conference. In 1972, Abdel Shafi founded and managed the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Gaza, transforming it into a hub for medical aid, social services, and cultural activities. He was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996 and served as the chair of its political committee.
