Mahmoud Darwish (March 13, 1941 – August 9, 2008) is one of the most influential Palestinian and Arab poets, whose name became synonymous with poetry of resistance and homeland. Darwish was instrumental in the evolution of modern Arabic poetry, weaving symbolism into his works where themes of love, homeland, and the beloved intertwine. Born in the village of Al-Birwa in the Galilee, which was occupied in 1948, Darwish also penned the Palestinian Declaration of Independence, which was proclaimed in Algiers.
